Are the warning passages in Scripture evidence that true believers can lose their salvation?
As we mark the Silver Anniversary of the publication of The Race Set Before Us, written by Ardel B. Caneday and Thomas R. Schreiner, this seminar reflects on the glorious coherence of God’s saving grace. The gospel does more than summon us to believe; it continues to call, to warn, and to preserve us as we run the race set before us. Scripture assures us that those whom God has chosen, called, and justified will surely be glorified. Yet the same gospel urgently exhorts us to endure in faith, to lay hold of Christ Jesus, and to press on toward the hope of justification on the Last Day.
Are God’s promises and warnings at odds? Does assurance of faith weaken perseverance? Or are exhortations themselves an appointed means by which God secures his people to receive his Last-Day verdict of acquittal already announced in his gospel?
Through careful attention to the biblical witness, this seminar explores how divine sovereignty and human endurance stand in harmony—so that, strengthened by grace, we may run with confidence toward the imperishable crown, eternal life.
